Yin Yoga is practiced entirely on the floor and uniquely serves joints, multiple layers of connective tissues and fascia. This practice is characterized by its slow, meditative pace utilizing muscularly relaxed postures that are held for longer periods of time. The approach allows for the muscular body to soften in order to modestly stimulate ligaments, fascia, and joint capsules. Yin Yoga's simple repertoire is unique for the health of the low back, spine, hips, sacrum, and knees. The intentional and systematic activation of the connective tissues and fascia encourages long-term health, flexibility, mobility, and pain reduction/relief. Themes of nourishment, insight, wisdom, and subtle energy pathways are presented throughout the practice to soothe the nervous system thus naturally drawing the mind inward into a calm, relaxed, and meditative state.

This class comes to us from Roots & River Yoga in Brunswick, MD.  Due to that, it is not recorded for later use for Lighthouse students - please plan to come live.

Machelle Lee

Machelle has 30 years of experience as a yoga teacher, massage therapist, childbirth educator, and lecturer. She holds a Masters Degree in Mythology and Depth Psychology and earned a 300 hour advanced certification in yoga psychology. Committed to serving students in a way that best fits their unique abilities and anatomic structure, Machelle teaches Yin Yoga in a way that synthesizes yogic teachings with modern scientific research on tissue rehabilitation, traditional medicines, psychology and sprinkles in rich imagery through poetry. This approach to the whole person aids one in feeling and understanding the body-mind connection both somatically and intellectually, facilitating a creative and grounded approach to self-development.

Rebecca Henry

Rebecca’s journey with yoga and meditation began more than twenty years ago when she took precepts with the Zen Buddhist Society of Compassionate Wisdom, finding that a vigorous yoga practice was the only way to keep her chattering mind quiet on her meditation mat. As those practices expanded into helping her with the stresses of school, and, later, work and family life, she has been exploring the benefits of her practice on and off the mat ever since.

Forever a student, Rebecca brings a beginners mind and an awakened heart to her practice and teaching. Compassion, empathy, humor and joy are at the core of all of her classes. Her focus is on uniting mindful movement with breath while helping people understand of how their own unique body affects their individual practice, in both a traditional hatha as well as a more vinyasa style.

 As a mother of two teenagers, she is impassioned to support other people in their journey into parenthood through the mindfulness and body-centered practices of yoga and meditation. As birth and postpartum doula, she emphasizes childbirth education and body awareness in her pre- and postnatal classes, bringing these practical aspects together with a warm, nurturing teaching style.

Rebecca completed her 200 hour training with Tara Lemerise at Willow Street Yoga in Takoma Park, MD, pre and post natal yoga teacher training with Debra Flashenburg of the Prenatal Yoga Center of New York City and is certified with Leslie Howard in Pelvic Floor Yoga™. She has also completed training with Tara Lemerise, of Tara Lemerise Yoga, in Restorative Yoga, and has completed a 50 hr Yin Yoga certification with Machelle Lee of Roots and River Yoga

Manju Sadarangani

Manju's yoga practice is grounded in a desire for equity, justice, emotional and mental well-being. She brings her spirit of play, body positivity and radical self-love to her Kundalini & Nidra classes. 

Born in India to a yoga teacher mother, Manju is committed to authenticity in the studio. A Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance, she connects deeply with the feminist, spiritual and historical foundations of yoga to counter problematic cultural appropriation. She relishes creating a safe space for all using breathe, color, naad, and mantras in her classes.

Manju invites you to consider yoga as a tool to recharge, resist and rebel.

Anna Franklin

When she suddenly became a part-time caretaker to a parent and then a sibling, Anna not only found the strength and courage in yoga to be a little kinder and a bit more patient, but also found herself increasingly attracted to the idea of sharing this healing practice with others. As a teacher, Anna strives to create a warm and welcoming community with her students while also focusing on the rigor of the practice to cultivate the rich and universal spirituality that yoga offers. She brings a sense of humor and deep care to her meditation and yoga classes. Her approach to teaching, much like her other work as a Workplace Wellness/Burnout Mitigation Consultant and Community Organizer (and pet sitter extraordinaire) is embodied by the spirit of Cura Personalis, or Care for the Whole Person. If you take a class, workshop, or attend a retreat with Anna, you can expect some time with your breath, space for reflection, (and maybe some chanting!). Anna completed her 200 hour Vinyasa yoga teacher training in 2014 at The Studio DC and her 220 hour Kundalini Yoga TT in 2017 at Lighthouse Yoga Center, graduated from The Living School at the Center for Action and Contemplation with Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, in 2019 and is currently a part of Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation’s Transforming Community: Leading Contemplative Spiritual Groups and Retreats. She leads retreats, workshops, and series both in the U.S. and overseas and is based in Washington, DC and Portugal. Anna is known for her humor and warmth, depth, and making a variety of practices accessible, welcoming, meditative, and dare we say: fun!
