$75.00 Mama Care Basics
You picked out your nursery theme and made your baby registry. You took
“Baby Care Basics” and know how to change your baby’s diaper, burp your
baby, swaddle them, and bathe them. You and your partner have discussed a
birth plan and you can’t wait to finally meet your little one and hold
them in your arms. But are you ready to meet yourself as the mother of
this baby? Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother. Motherhood
transforms a woman into someone she never knew she could be. You will
persevere and overcome challenges you never thought yourself strong
enough to, and you may not even recognize who you are on the other side.
Women experience intense emotional, mental, and physical changes during
the perinatal period, and there are few supports to help women prepare,
process, and cope with this major metamorphosis. In Mama-Care Basics,
you will be guided through an introspective process to identify your own
traits, strengths, and needs, and assess your home and relationships in
preparation for the changes this tiny human will bring to your life.
Vaishi Tallury leads this intimate group of expectant mothers on a
journey; beginning with a gentle, centering yoga session, followed by
guided activities to promote self-awareness of their roles, routines,
and identity. Information, tools, and resources (local and online) will
be provided to educate mothers on Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders
(PMADs), feeding/pumping, ergonomics, and lifestyle considerations.
Participants will leave with an increased sense of confidence,
community, and future support network as they approach this new phase of
life. This workshop is most appropriate for soon-to-be mamas in their second and third trimesters.
Vaishnavi Tallury
Vaishnavi Tallury, MA, OTR/L is a licensed Occupational Therapist with
13 years of experience in pediatric, school-based OT and a certified
yoga instructor. While on maternity leave with her second child during
the summer of 2022, she unexpectedly found herself feeling lost, stuck,
tired, and like she just needed to “OT-herself.” Having knowledge and
skills in rehabilitation, she knew what she needed to do, but just
didn’t have the capacity to do those things. This struck her with the
question- how can we better prepare women for the transformation into
motherhood? In speaking with other mom friends, she found she was not
alone in this struggle and two common themes emerged: 1.) It takes a
village and 2.) We were prepared for the challenges of bringing home a
newborn, but not adequately prepared to take care of ourselves in this
new role of “mother.” Vaishi immediately knew this was her calling and
that she would utilize her experiences as a yoga instructor,
occupational therapist, and most importantly mother, to help prepare
expectant mothers for Matrescence. The perinatal period begins during
pregnancy and continues up to a year after giving birth. Through the
lens of occupational therapy, Vaishi works to support mother and baby as
a holistic unit to promote connectedness and well-being. Vaishi lives
in Washington, DC with her husband, two daughters, and 10-year-old dog
who still acts like a puppy. She is excited to serve mothers and babies
during this critical perinatal period.
